Chainlink links Anchorage custody to DeFi borrowing

Can Anchorage clients borrow in DeFi without moving their crypto out of custody? Chainlink says yes: on Oct. 26 it announced CustodySync, with Anchorage Digital Bank as its launch partner, to connect custodied assets to onchain lending markets. That could give institutions access to DeFi loans while their custodian keeps control of the collateral.

How does CustodySync connect custody to a loan?

Chainlink’s CustodySync announcement describes a system that keeps a custodian’s collateral records in step with a lending market. Proof of Reserve publishes custody balances onchain, and a transfer-restricted receipt token represents the collateral in the lending market. Chainlink says that token does not give holders a claim on the underlying assets outside the lending integration.

When a client borrows, funds move from the lending market to the borrower. Chainlink’s Runtime Environment coordinates authorized actions and records borrowing, repayment and interest accrual in the custodian’s system. Data Feeds price the position onchain, while Data Streams send matching prices to the custodian, so both sides can calculate loan-to-value using the same data.

Who handles a margin call or liquidation?

Anchorage’s Atlas Collateral Management product works with the system, and Anchorage acts as the appointed collateral agent. If a loan crosses its liquidation threshold, the agent handles the sale through its own process. CustodySync records committed sale proceeds onchain before final settlement. Crypto.news also reported on the launch and summarized the receipt-token and liquidation mechanics.

What does a borrower need to use it?

This is an institutional custody and lending arrangement, not a way for any wallet holder to borrow. A client would need eligible assets held with a participating custodian and access to a lending market connected through CustodySync. Chainlink’s announcement does not name a lending protocol, set loan terms, disclose fees or report completed borrowing through the new system. It says custodians, lending markets and risk curators can contact Chainlink Labs to get started.

So the practical offer is a route to DeFi liquidity while collateral remains in qualified custody; the cost, available assets, borrowing limits and market access still depend on arrangements that the announcement leaves unspecified.
